The last edition of MITM Americas in Havana, Cuba, resulted to be the best MITM ever

By Karin de Graauw

The 15th edition of MITM Americas, was held in Havana by invitation of Mintur and the Cuban Convention Bureau, born out of their interest to attract to the city of Havana the maximum possible of congresses, conferences, events and incentive travel groups’ business.

For MITM, which has been held since 15 years ago throughout Europe, North Africa and South, Center and North America, the success of MITM in Havana has not been a surprise, attracting numerous and important users and buyers of incentive travel, conferences, congresses and events of all Europe and even the United States, forcing to close the visitors’ registration 3 months before MITM’s dates, because of already having more professional visitors than exhibitors. This shows that many events organizers of all Europe an North Amercia are interested in Cuba as destination for congresses and incentive travel.

To MITM in Havana have attended congresses, conferences, events and incentive travel organizers from 16 countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine and the United States. MITM received more than 200 organizers’ requests to visit MITM in Havana – a good number of them could not attend because there was no more space.

Under visitors and also exhibitors’ requests, MITM programmed 2,620 encounters between all the exhibitors and visitors, estimating to generate a business for Cuba of about 13 million euros in lodging, restaurants, shopping, etc. in future incentive groups, congresses, conferences and events.

MITM thanked Cuba for inviting MITM for the second time to hold MITM in this attractive city, as well as Melia hotels to offer the halls of the magnificent Melia Cohiba to celebrate MITM. The Cuban Convention Bureau and Melia Hotels of Cuba have shown their vision by putting effort in seeking the profitable touristic market niche of business travel, particularly in the moment when international tourism is in a crisis and many countries and companies have suppressed or cut off promotional expenses, exactly at the least appropriate time.

Cuba Tourism Board is consolidating its place in the Benelux market. With lots of Cuban music, drinks and food, the new Benelux offices of Cuba Tourism Board were inaugurated. The Rotterdam office was opened on 22 October, and the Belgian/Luxemburg antenna was launched on 19 November. This new structure is headed by Fidel Henrique Rodriguez.
At the same time a new PR partner for the Belgian and Luxemburg market was introduced: Glenaki, Tourism Industry Consultancy with Birgit Defoort as its General Manager.
All this was launched with a genuine ‘Fiesta Cubana’ in Brussels on 19 November.

Both the creation of the new offices and the contract for the PR activities in Belgium and Luxemburg are the result of the growing interest of this market in the Caribbean as a tourism destination, with Cuba in particular. Last summer the arrivals from Belgium showed a significant increase and the forecast for the coming years confirm this trend.

It is difficult not to associate Havana with superb architecture, colourful vintage cars, joyful music and –most importantly- with friendly and always cheerful people. Just a mere stroll along the Malecón is a unique experience in its own. This is the best place to feel what Havana and the Habaneros are all about. And Habana Vieja, Unesco-listed World Heritage is currently being restored to its original splendour.
One of the Cuban attraction poles is undoubtedly the country’s exotic flavours. The exceptional climate, the relaxed Caribbean atmosphere with its music, the quality of the beaches is topped off by the outstanding cultural beauty of Cuba’s cities like Havana. Not unimportant, Cuba is a very safe destination.

In the coming years the authorities wish to promote ecotourism. The richness of the Cuban nature is, indeed, overwhelming and deserves its own place in the tourism offer. Therefore, the country has an active policy of protecting sites of outstanding natural beauty and at the same time adapting them to be enjoyed by visitors.
The nature of not less than one quarter of the island is protected, showing the efforts of the authorities to preserve this unique scenery. These national parks and the protected landscapes, the ‘paisajes naturals protegidos’ have a tremendous tourist potential, not in the least because of their huge biodiversity.

The combination of all these assets makes Cuba into a highly suitable destination for corporate incentives. Hotels, incentive attractions, professional DMCs and ground operators have the necessary expertise and experience to make any incentive action into a success.
