TICINO: ALPS & LAKES, A GREAT COMBO

By Viviane Vogels

One thing can definitely be said about the Swiss, they have a sense of adventure! End August Switzerland Tourism & Ticino Turismo managed over 30 nationalities together in Lugano for a press trip.
Impressive organization, starting with a flawless connection in Zurich on to a direct train to Lugano after a smooth flight on Swiss. From the moment our group arrived on Swiss soil, we were welcomed, directed and taken care of in a friendly yet efficient manner.

Lugano
lagunoHere the sun is more intense, warmer and the mountains are redder, chestnuts, vines, almonds and figs are grown here and the inhabitants are good, educated and kind…”

Herman Hesse, Nobel Prize winner for literature 1946

The 3rd financial centre of Switzerland, Lugano, is a peaceful little town on Lake Lugano with a distinct Italian flavor. Terraces along the waterfront or in the old city, invite to ‘dolce far niente’, life goes on at a leisurely pace in this lovely town.

Lugano is made for small to middle large groups looking for a bit of class and flair, good food and impressive scenery.

Local cuisine is based on simple and genuine products such as the local salami and is accompanied perfectly by a glass of Merlot, the king of the Ticino wines. All these good things are best savored in the grottos, country-style restaurants with stone tables in shaded areas.

Palazzo Mantegazza is an impressive, brand new glass design building on a choice piece of waterfront. It opened its doors last December and houses shopping, restaurants, offices and luxury apartments (Michael Schumacher is one of the apartment owners!).
The owner created a unique venue in his building, ideal for product launches & presentations with emphasis on multimedia. An impressive array of projectors, screens and lights (more than 100 km cables were used !!) transform a ‘black box’ venue into a room where colors, sounds and impressions abound, thus creating the perfect setting adapted to the demands of the client. Porsche (cars can access the room), UBS and other companies have already made use of this venue full of wonders of technology for events. The room measures 515 m² and can take up to 400 people and is definitely worth the detour!

Fattoria Moncucchetto
MoncucchettoLugano is sprawled over several hills and lower mountains; imagine then in the middle of this prime real estate a quiet piece of heaven of 3 hectares of….vines. In the middle of this peaceful place rises a stark yet elegant modern building by the famous architect Mario Botta: the Moncucchetto winery.

Privately owned, the winery produces a delicious 100% MoncucchettoMerlot (red & white) but it is mainly the building itself that got our attention. The ground floor is where not only the wine is made but also where the bottles are kept, the first floor is designed for parties. The family have retained a great Chef (formerly chef of a restaurant 2* Michelin) who not only produces the choicest meals with local produce but he is also available for cooking demos or classes for small groups. The charm of the family & the chef as well as the quality of the venue and the wines, coupled to a stunning view of the lake, make this a venue worthwhile visiting.

Villa Leopold

Lugano offers a fair choice of good hotels and can handle a convention of a couple of thousand participants easily with its actual capacity which is being increased by 2012. I discovered the Villa Principe Leopoldo, a Relais & Chateaux property with – another – incredible panoramic view from all rooms, bar & restaurant. A place of quiet and classic luxury with highly personalized service and discreet charm. The function rooms are stylish yet efficiently appointed, a place to remember. www.leopoldohotel.com

Villa Leopoldo Monte Generoso

There are plenty of excursion and activity opportunities in and around Lugano: a cruise on the lake, a hike up Monte Generoso (1.704 m) (or like we did, take a gentle ride up in a little train) to the finest Panoramic view over the whole Canton Ticino and from where you can see all the way to Milan… on a clear day! I forgive the huge cloud which decided to hang around the top at the same time our group arrived! Even the alpine horns could not chase it away.
Speaking of Milan, the city and its airport are less than 1 hour away with regular shuttle busses connecting the two cities.
Lago Maggiore, Locarno & Ascona are all nearby and complete the gorgeous offer of that great region: Ticino.

Ticino

I’d like once more to stress the sense of humor of the Swiss. Proof is the latest promotional clip illustrating the “2010, year of hiking” promotion of the Swiss Tourist Board; click here for a good smile!

This trip was made possibly by Switzerland Tourism, Swiss International Air Lines, Travel System for the trains and of course Ticino Turismo!

The problem of freeloaders* is one we all share in the MICE industry, and we are hearing more and more complaints from suppliers everywhere.
BBT Online is therefore proposing a major new initiative - to maintain and keep up-to-date on behalf of the MICE industry an 'F' listing for the industry, made by the industry.
